D'ya NoVei" (16) a Filipina-American was born in the United States of America. Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, “The Entertainment Capital of the World”, D'ya NoVei' watched her mother sing and dance on stage and was inspired to pursue her own career in the music industry. D'ya started to show talent as an artist as early as 7 years old! D'ya was awarded from "Reflection’s" as an artist/singer recognition and achievement program for students sponsored by the National PTA, where she was given an award signed by former United States president George W. Bush. Born with not only the passion to sing and dance, D'ya also demonstrates talents for, songwriting, acting, and modeling as well.

Later on, D'ya enrolled in a Talent Development Academy where she pursued her career in ¬acting, commercial/print, modeling, singing, and dance. She attended many classes and workshops at the academy, and has worked with many people in the industry. It is here that D'ya got her first taste of her dream in a Teen Pop Duo group, where she worked with famous Grammy Award winning Songwriters and Producers that started to make a big splash into the music industry by introducing a fresh and young, yet mainstream approach to pop music, as well as an active presence in TV and film. However, D'ya still pursued her other talents by attending AMTC where she made special live performances to highlight her talents in different categories such as; singing, spokes model, monologue, television commercial, photography and creative fashion print held at Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, Florida. She also did a nationwide TV commercial at the age of thirteen (13). Other special performances includes, an opening act for Jesse McCartney for Summer Jam '09 at the Henderson Pavilion, Girls’ Days Out (modeling, singing and dancing) South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Kids Mix Las Vegas 2008 (modeling, singing and dance), Fashion Show Mall at Dillard's Las Vegas, Nevada(modeling) and many International performances. D'ya recently received an Appreciation award from her fan club in Cebu, Philippines for sharing her God-given talent in singing.

Returning Back In The USA From My Venture...

Finally I am able make an updated post. Honestly, it took me a few times Sign-In due to the lenght of time not making post to this website. Wow..! Not a great thing to do!

Well, I have a great stories to share about what's going on? There is some great things happened to me during my travel to my hometown the Island of Cebu, Philippines. I was able to purchased and acquired a land with 27 hectares (271 Acres). All I dream is that one day I would want to owned 1 hectare to build my dream house! God is so good to me! Instead, he rewarded me with more than I could ever think of and dreamed of! I am so overwhelmed with the grace that god has given me. I believe in faith, persistence, good intentions and sincerity to help others who's in need. The GOOD KARMA is coming back to me. I always pray to god and ask for strenght in every challenging decision I have to make. I am only human that makes mistakes but at least I tried and be positive about it! Life is tough sometimes and I have gone through bumps and rough roads in my life but because I have faith in god I was able to pursue my life long dreams. I had a really great venture during the past months. I will be showing some images and more stories to tell about my explorations in my next post.

It took me long to make an updated post due to the fact that I have been very busy trying to keep up with the recession of our economy in the US. Everyday the first thing in the morning when I wake up setting down on the table having a cup of coffee, both my husband and I are trying to come up with an idea and solution how to cut down things to meet our financial budget. So far so good! We talk things out and resolve the circumstances in our daily life activities. My only wish is having a continuous good strength to keep up with it. Keeping a positive attitude, pray and have faith in god is the best thing you could do to have a peace of mind. Whatever consequences it is, I am still thankful to god for having a good health and receiving grace everyday of my life.

You have to remember, "Life is to short...!" So, live life to the fullest and be thankful to god...

I read 30 minutes every morning as soon as I awake up and 30minutes right before going to bed. These are two times are when the subconscious mind is most receptive. Start your day and end your evening by putting positive success related information in your mind. Don't try to give me an excuse that you're too busy! It's all about creating successful, winning habits. Get up 30 minutes earlier and turn the TV off at night and read a book that will help you to grow personally, professionally, financially or spiritually.

When one month is over, I move on to the next month's book, even if I didn't finish the book. But I always finish the book well in advance of the end of the month because, I don't read every word, and you shouldn't either. Get in the habit of skimming the paragraphs and pages, only focusing on the important points. I always read with a pen and highlighter so I can make notes of the most important ideas.

For me, excellence is not an act it's a habit!

Analog Will Turn Those Signals Off Friday And Go All Digital

Because digital signals are more efficient than the analog TV broadcasts that have been on the air for six decades, the transition will make room in the airwaves for wireless Internet and emergency communications services. Nearly half of the nation's 1,760 full-power TV stations have already cut their analog signals, though they are mostly in thinly populated areas. Come Friday, older, non-digital TV sets will lose all major channels unless they have an antenna and a converter box that allows them to accept digital signals, or if they are hooked up to cable or satellite.

The last major TV stations that are still broadcasting in analog will turn those signals off Friday and go all digital. And this time, they really mean it. The original Feb. 17 deadline for the shutdown was delayed by the Obama administration after funding ran out for $40 coupons the government offered to help people buy converter boxes for old TVs. Now officials say the country is much better prepared than in February, though they still expect some viewers to be confused. About 3.1 million U.S. homes were unprepared to receive digital signals as of late last month, according to the Nielsen Co. That's half the number that were unprepared in February, and the number will probably decline further by Friday, as procrastinators get around to replacing old TVs or hooking them up to converter boxes or cable or satellite service.

Air France Airbus A330 Flight AF 447 Was Found In Atlantic Ocean

Below is a copy of a letter that was sent to me from one of my friends through e-mail. I decided to post the letter to let all my friends, co-bloggers and readers to be aware of your sorroundings. This is a true story and please, spread this message to everyone!

Look at what the enemy has come up with now. Snopes approved. I locked my car, and as I walked away, I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again...three times. I looked around, and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. When I looked straight at them, they did not unlock my car again. How to lock your car safely While traveling, my son stopped at a roadside park. He came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into the car, and had stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator briefcase.....you name it. He called the police, and since there were no signs of his car being broken into... the police told him that there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device. They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside the store, restaurant, or bathroom, and have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said ...to be sure to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car as you exit your vehicle, that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you. When you hit the lock button inside your car upon exiting...it does not send the security code. But if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be stolen. Something totally new to us...and real. Be aware of this, and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our keys...just to be sure we remembered to lock them. And bingo....someone has our code...and whatever was in the car will be gone!

Overnight helicopter water drops and calming wind helped crews Wednesday hold off a wildfire that forced the evacuation of 1,200 homes. Some 2,000 homes were threatened by the 400 acre fire north of the city that portended an early start to California's annual wildfire siege. Researchers believe it was held in place by an ice bridge linking Charcot Island to the Antarctic mainland.

But the 127 square mile (330-square-kilometer) bridge lost two large chunks last year and then shattered completely on April 5. The first icebergs broke away on Friday, and since then some 270 square miles (700 square kilometers) of ice have dropped into the sea, according to the satellite data. The falling away of Antarctic ice shelves does not, in itself, raise sea levels, since the ice was already floating in the sea. But such coastal tables of ice usually hold back glaciers, and when they disintegrate that land ice will often flow more quickly into the sea, contributing to sea-level rise.

I was expecting nothing more than flash and style and no substance. I can say that at least in the orange flavor they delivered a really good gummy bear experience. The ingredients list both pectin and gelatin, which is what I owe the even texture to. They’d be a fun hostess gift, a great addition to a gift basket or Christmas stocking or if you could find a good deal in bulk, a party favor and maybe sugar free candy would be an ideal for someone who has health issues.

Candy is something for one person to eat, it seems a little silly, but it’s definitely a fun thing to share with others. On the whole I prefer the variety and look of the regular sized ones! The occasional other sweet adventures is open your mouth and expand your mind...!

For me it's a perfect vacation for a family because you get to see and you're able to visit different places during the whole week! The best thing is if you want the room service, you get to order anything from their menu even if you want the whole menu you can have it. I advise to purchase the "Fountain Card" so you don't have to pay for the drinks (exclude alcohol) each time you need it. You can go to any of their bars on the ship and room service! Salmon Over Jasmine Rice
Makes 4 servings

Ingredients
2 (3.5-ounce) bags SUCCESS Jasmine Rice, uncooked
1/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup lite soy sauce
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
4 (4-ounce) salmon fillets
1/4 cup sliced green onions

Preparation
1. Prepare rice according to package directions.
2. Preheat oven to 375°. Cook orange juice and next 4 ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 1 minute; let cool slightly.
3. Reserve 2/3 cup marinade; transfer remaining marinade to a large shallow dish or zip-top plastic freezer bag; add salmon. Cover or seal, and chill 15 minutes. Remove salmon from marinade, discarding marinade. Place salmon in an aluminum foil-lined pan.
4. Bake at 375° for 20 minutes or to desired degree of doneness.
5. Meanwhile, cook reserved marinade in a small saucepan over medium heat 5 minutes or until sauce is thick and syrupy.
6. Transfer rice to a serving platter, and top with salmon. Drizzle with sauce, and sprinkle with green onions.

3 C water

2 T oil
2 C additional water
1 tsp minced garlic
Salt and pepper to taste
¼ C chopped onion
1 T bagoong (fermented shrimp paste)
2 tomatoes, cubed
½ lb spinach or watercress leaves

Boil mung beans in 3 C water till tender. In another pan, brown garlic and onion. Add shrimp paste, tomatoes and cook till soft. Add pork, and cook till tender. Add shrimps and cook for an additional 5 min. Add boiled mung beans and 2 C water to sauteed mixture. Bring to a boil again. Season with salt and pepper. Add spinach immediately after mixture comes to boil. Serve hot over rice.

Silverstein, unable to obtain financing for all the towers and with only about $1 billion left in insurance money to pay for them, asked the Port Authority last fall to guarantee financing for two of his towers, officials familiar with the negotiations say.

Returning Back Home In The U.S.A.

I am finally back home in the U.S. from my trip to the Philippines due to the tragic death of my brother ARNIEL aka "Cocoy". It was not an easy flight thinking that I will get there just in time, hoping for a chance to talk to him and able to say goodbye! I cannot stop thinking about my brother that he died at a very young age (35) and such a real good individual. Still up to now, I have a hard time convincing myself because it was so sudden! I cannot describe the pain in my heart, so empty, so devastated and kept asking myself why...? why...? why him...?

I find it so hard and so difficult for me to leave home (Cebu) going back to the U.S. knowing that in my next visit, my brother "Cocoy" will no longer there to pick me up at the airport and making sure that I am taking care of. What hurts me the most is, I lost my very best friend who listens, my shoulder to cry on and leaned on when I'm down. And each time I visit home back in the Philippines with or without my family with me, he is my company in every places I go to see! A good person that I can reach on that I know I can trust and count on all the time for the things that needs to be done. A person who put so much time and effort making sure things are done right so I will enjoy every of my visit. I missed him so dearly that until now I have a hard time accepting the fact the he is no longer with us and no longer living in this world. I know that in my next visit to my hometown in the Philippines that "Cocoy" will not be there anymore! It is going to take some time, but I know his soul is watching over me and my family!

As you noticed, I haven't been posting and updating my website for the past few days! I had to go home back in the Philippines on Feb. 23, 2009 due to a family emergency. My brother ARNIEL (Cocoy) was in critical condition fighting for his life and he died last Friday, Feb. 27, 2009. He was diagnosed with Hepatitis C a year ago and had developed Liver Cirrhosis. He died at the age of 35. He left 3 young children and wife. It is so sad to even think about that the kids (my nieces and nephew) are now going through hard times at a very young ages and could not believe that they lost their loving father! Died at a very young age it is so difficult to even think and accept the fact that he is no longer with us anymore! My brother is such a very generous man, kind and very respectful. I am so torn apart with his death!

Cause of my brother's death:

Hepatitis C was the most common virus contracted through transfusions of blood or blood-clotting factors. Millions of patients were transfused with blood infected with this virus in the years before the virus was identified. Today, all blood is tested, and people are highly unlikely to receive contaminated blood. However, hepatitis C is still acquired by other means. These include needles shared by IV drug users, needles used in tattoo parlors, and needle-stick injury in health-care workers. Hepatitis C can also be transmitted sexually and can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy and delivery. In some studies, more than 20 percent of cases had no obvious identifiable risk factor for infection, and these remain a mystery.

The liver is an incredibly resilient organ, but unfortunately it isn’t indestructible. Sometimes the damage that occurs as a result of excessive alcohol, a virus, or some other chronic disease overwhelms the liver’s capacity to function. Healthy liver cells are destroyed, and scarring occurs. Scarring, known as fibrosis, is the liver’s effort to keep the damage done by alcohol or the hepatitis C virus (HCV), for example, contained. But, scar tissue can block the blood flow through the liver, resulting in an inability of the liver to perform its normal duties. If alcohol, or HCV, is not eliminated from the body, scarring becomes extensive. The liver becomes rock hard and nodular (lumpy). This condition is known as cirrhosis. Although the presence of cirrhosis does not signify that health problems will inevitably develop, a person with cirrhosis should be aware that he is at an increased risk of suffering many serious complications.

We visited the world renowned history of Simala in Sibonga, Cebu, Philippines. The sacred place where the Marian Monks lived the displayed healing miracle of Mama Mary!

The home video with the image of "Sr. Sto. Nino (baby Jesus)" visited and appeared passing by the front of the Mother Mary's glass cover! The place is so sacred! I went inside the church to see the shrine of "Mama Mary" and fall in line so I can touch her, can really pray without distractions. I saw pictures and letters from the people who experienced the miracle and healed their illnesses. Also the picture of the Philippine President, and other famous people who visited and made donations. The shrine became known after word spread that the image of the Virgin Mary was seen “shedding tears of blood,” a phenomenon that lacks scientific or official church validation but nevertheless draws more people to the area. The Marian monks who maintain the shrine have also landscaped the area, which has a mini falls that cascades down a small pool and well-tended gardens. Signboards warn people that picking the flowers would be like “stealing from Mother Mary”. Families can have picnics and meals in cottages built for visitors. Adults and Childrens like to throw coins in a wishing well which features a large bell. Those who grumble about the distance are quickly shamed by the sight of elderly men and women on wheelchairs and crutches who go there to hear Mass and line up to kiss the image of Mary. These senior citizens don veils on their heads while praying, the same one Mother Mary wore when she “shed tears of blood. My experience at Simala, is an unexplainable feeling and it's a place where you can have a peace of mind!

No place is too far to visit for a miracle. People whose only hope to cure their sickness is miracle, are always in search for instruments of God’s miraculous grace.

I promised my Mom and my brothers that I would treat them a trip to Manila to attend and explore the ABS-CBN TV Game Show called "Wowowee" which was aired on September 17, 2008. I also decided to bring my cousin Al and my best friend Bebe with us. We had so much fun! Everybody's adrenalin level were so high and so pumped up! The Newly Discovered Fault In Eastern Arkansas

A previously unknown fault in eastern Arkansas could trigger a magnitude 7 earthquake with an epicenter near a major natural gas pipeline, a scientist said Wednesday. Haydar Al-Shukri, the director of the Arkansas Earthquake Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, said the fault is separate from the New Madrid fault responsible for a series of quakes in 1811-12 that caused the Mississippi River to flow backward. Acres of cotton fields cover the fault west of Marianna, about 100 miles east of Little Rock, but stretches of fine sand mixed with fertile soil gave away the fault's location, Al-Shukri said. Liquefied sand bubbled up through cracks in the earth, while ground radar and digs showed vents that let the sand reach the surface. The fault, likely created in the last 5,000 years, sparked at least one magnitude 7 earthquake in its history. Such temblors cause massive destruction in their wake. Such a quake would affect Little Rock and neighboring states such as Tennessee and Mississippi. Hundreds of earthquakes occur each year, including several in Arkansas. Most Arkansas earthquakes occur in the state's northeast corner in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, but the Marianna fault was not connected because it was too far from the temblors caused by that zone.

During the winter of 1811 and 1812, a series of three earthquakes with magnitudes of around 8 struck the zone and much smaller temblors continue to hit today.

President Obama In His First National Prayer Service

President Barack Obama on Wednesday participated in a traditional, post-inaugural national prayer service and listened intently to a sermon that implored him to "feed the good wolf within" and not be tempted away from his "ethical center." Obama made the first public appearance on his first full day in office at a religious service, a tradition that dates to George Washington. Obama departed the White House from the Oval Office, accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and headed for the Washington National Cathedral for the multiracial, multireligious worship. The new president and first lady sat in the front pew of the church, alongside Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill. Former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, awaiting confirmation as secretary of state, also sat in the first row. The "Sinulog Festival" is a nine day celebration beginning on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, Philippines. Held in honor of the baby Jesus (Santo Niño), there is great religion significance to the festival, and people flock from all over the world to participate. But it isn’t just a homage paid to Cebu’s patron saint, the Santo Niño, it’s also a recognition of the pagan roots of the people, and their eventual choice to convert to the Christianity brought to them by the foreigners who passed through their great land. It’s a beautiful festival of past and present traditions, or pride in the original beliefs of the people, as well as the ones they adopted as their own.

Think of it as something beyond a mere religious event, as it’s also a huge party dedicated to the rich culture of the Philippines, and an experience you will never forget. This has been an ongoing tradition for Cebuano's. The devotion to the Holy Child (Santo Niño) was brought to the Philippines in the 1500’s. As is so typical in these stories of religious devotion in the Philippines, the people were in a state of expectation for the Holy Child as he was prefigured in their animist religion. When Magellan arrived, things began peacefully. The Queen of Cebu, Ratu Humanay, was very touched when encountering the Santo Niño statue that Magellan brought with him. She asked to be baptized. People often time think that the Santo Niño de Cebu devotion is the same as the Infant of Prague. The Filipino devotion has an earlier history since Magellan landed in 1521 and the devotion was revived when Legazpi arrived in 1565. Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu and the remains of the Spanish fleet hobbled back to Spain. The crew of 250 was reduced to 8. It took some years for the Spanish king to put the Philippines back on its immediate agenda.

When Miguel de Legazpi returned, he fired on the village. Probably in retaliation for Magellan’s death. Several of the huts caught fire, then the wind changed and the rest of the village was kept from burning. One of the Spanish soldiers found a chest with Spanish rope tied around it. In that chest was this statue of the Santo Niño, lying hidden for 44 years. It was the statue given by Magellan to Ratu Humanay. When I was a little girl back in my hometown Cebu, Philippines, I knew so many people who had a deep devotion to the Santo Niño. Stories about prayers answered, tragedies averted, jobs gotten, narrow escapes abounded in the lore of the answered prayer. Filipinos have an external way of showing religious devotion. They are big on ritual, fiesta, public encounters with the Divine.

Residents of the upper Midwest bundled up or just stayed inside Tuesday as a wave of bitterly cold air barreled south out of the Arctic, following on the heels of a fast moving blizzard. Some schools closed because of the cold and temperatures hit the single digits as far south as Kansas and Missouri. The coldest air spilled across the Canadian prairie into the Dakotas and Minnesota. Grand Forks, N.D., dropped to a record low of 37 degrees below zero Tuesday morning, lopping six degrees off the old record set in 1979, the National Weather Service said. In northern Minnesota, it was 35 below zero in Roseau and 36 below in Hallock, with wind chills down to 45 below in Hibbing. Just to the north, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, also hit minus 36, according to Environment Canada. In North Dakota, the Minot area got 6 inches of snow, on top of about a foot that fell late last week, and Bismarck collected 4. Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks all broke snow records for December, each with more than 30 inches. Dozens of Iowa schools were closed Tuesday or opened late and travel was not recommended across much of the northern part of the state because of the combination of the cold minus 14 in Mason City with a wind chill of 37 below and the 2 to 4 inches of windblown snow the storm delivered Monday. The leading edge of the cold air was expected to strike the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and South late Tuesday and Wednesday. And meteorologists warned that a second wave could drop temperatures into the single digits Friday in the mid-Atlantic region.

Road departments have had little time to clear away the snow between storms.

A time for plunging into boisterous crowds bathed in loud music. And for some of us, that means turning to an old friend and hearing things like this: "Did you know (BOOM-da-da-BOOM) went over (Bob! You look wonder-) so she said (clink-clink) and then I (Here, have another one) what would you do?" Huh? Too noisy to hear! But wait how come these younger people understood what she said? What's wrong with your ears? Actually, part of the problem may be your brain. In fact, it may lie in your brain's dimmer switch for controlling the input from your ears. That bit of brain circuitry appears to falter with age, and scientists are getting some clues about why. If you have trouble understanding conversation in a noisy room, you're experiencing what's sometimes called the cocktail party problem. That can be one of the first signs of an age-related hearing loss a more general problem that can creep in during middle age, and affects one-third of adults ages 65 to 75. Scientists have long known that the brain not only receives signals from the ears, but can also talk back to them. And when there's too much noise, this dimmer switch brain circuitry tells the ears to reduce their flow of signals to the brain. Another crucial element lies within the inner ear, where sound is converted to nerve signals. That's accomplished by cells that use delicate hairs to detect sound waves. These hair cells can be damaged by aging and by long hours in loud environments like rock concerts.

Loss of those cells makes it harder to understand speech in noisy rooms. For example, it can hinder one's hearing of high sound frequencies, like those of certain consonants. Losing those consonant sounds can make words hard to understand in noisy situations. While scientists continue to study hearing problems, people who have trouble understanding their fellow partygoers can take some steps to help themselves. Oyler suggests facing the speaker directly to get facial cues that might fill in some blanks. And don't be shy about admitting the problem and suggesting a move to a quieter place. Scientists are still trying to piece together why our hearing goes downhill with age, with the goal of trying to slow it or even reverse it.

Israeli Missile Strike In The Northern Gaza Strip

Israeli warplanes pressing one of Israel's deadliest assaults ever on Palestinian militants dropped bombs and missiles on a top security installation, smuggling tunnels and dozens of other targets across Hamas ruled Gaza on Sunday. Israel called up 6,500 reserve soldiers and moved tanks, infantry and armored units to the Gaza border for a possible ground invasion. Some 280 Palestinians died in the first 24 hours of the campaign against Gaza rocket squads. Most of the dead were Hamas police, but the airstrikes also claimed the lives of civilians, including a 15 year old boy killed Saturday inside a greenhouse. Palestinians breached the border fence with Egypt and hundreds poured across the frontier, prompting Egyptian guards to open fire, said officials and witnesses on both sides. Militants in Gaza, meanwhile, fired dozens of rockets and mortars into Israel on Sunday. Two rockets struck close to the largest city in southern Israel, Ashdod, some 38 kilometers (23 miles) from Gaza, reaching deeper into Israel than ever before. The targeting of Ashdod confirmed Israel's concern that militants are capable of putting major cities within rocket range. No serious injuries were reported in any of the attacks Sunday. One Israeli died in a rocket attack Saturday.

The Vatican Is Endorsing New Technology Of The Daily Prayers Onto IPhones

The Vatican is endorsing new technology that brings the book of daily prayers used by priests straight onto iPhones. The Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications is embracing the iBreviary, an iTunes application created by a technologically savvy Italian priest, the Rev. Paolo Padrini, and an Italian Web designer. The application includes the Breviary prayer book in Italian, English, Spanish, French and Latin and, in the near future, Portuguese and German. Another section includes the prayers of the daily Mass, and a third contains various other prayers. After a free trial period in which the iBreviary was downloaded approximately 10,000 times in Italy, an official version was released earlier this month, Padrini said. The application costs euro0.79 ($1.10), while upgrades will be free. Padrini's proceeds are going to charity. Monsignor Paul Tighe, secretary of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications, praised the new application Monday, saying the Church "is learning to use the new technologies primarily as a tool or as a mean of evangelizing, as a way of being able to share its own message with the world."

Pope Benedict XVI, a classical music lover who was reportedly given an iPod in 2006, has sought to reach out to young people through new media. During last summer's World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, he sent out mobile phone text messages citing scripture to thousands of registered pilgrims signed with the tagline "BXVI."

A rare pre-winter storm brought Las Vegas its heaviest snowfall in nearly three decades, closing the airport and freeways as several inches coated marquees on the Las Vegas Strip and weighed down palm trees. The storm Wednesday and early Thursday also dumped snow on rain on much of southern California and parts of Nevada outside Las Vegas. The weather service recorded 7.5 inches of snow at McCarran on Jan. 30-31, 1979. The snow Wednesday prompted the cancellation of all flights in and out of Vegas. Visitors parked and posed for pictures wearing hooded jackets. Other parts of Nevada were forecast to receive as much as 8 inches of snow in the second winter storm this week to drop snow on the desert city. Snowfall is common in nearby mountains hills, but not on the Strip or surrounding neighborhoods.

Without Power At The Peak Of The Outage Due To An Ice Storm

Utility crews worked through a night of hand-numbing cold in the Northeast but they still had a long way to go before restoring power to all of the more than 1 million homes and businesses blacked out by a huge ice storm. In New Hampshire, where more than 370,000 customers still had no electricity Saturday, Gov. John Lynch urged residents still without power to make overnight plans early. Temperatures dipped into the teens Friday night and early Saturday in northern New England, forcing many people out of their homes and into shelters. About 60 people spent the night at the Rochester, N.H., Middle School. The ice storm compared with some of the Northeast's worst, especially in New Hampshire, where more than half the state 400,000 plus homes and businesses was without power at the peak of the outage. Far fewer customers were affected by the infamous Ice Storm of '98, when some residents spent more than a week in the dark. New Hampshire opened at least 25 shelters. People lost power as far south as Pennsylvania, but mAt least one death was blamed on the storm: New Hampshire officials said a man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after turning on his generator when his power went out Thursday night. Both Lynch and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick declared states of emergency Friday and called up members of the National Guard. Maine Gov. John Baldacci declared a limited emergency allowing utility crews to work longer hours. Most of the outages were in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York.

Sony Is Slashing 8,000 Jobs Due To Worldwide Slowdown

Sony Corp. is slashing 4 percent of its worldwide work force, reining in spending and shutting plants as it tries to ride out a looming worldwide recession that is battering Japan's export-reliant manufacturers. Tokyo based Sony, which is cutting 8,000 of its 185,000 jobs, said Tuesday it will shut five or six plants about 10 percent of its 57 factories. Sony also plans to reduce its electronics investments by about one-third by the end of March 2010, although it did not give specific numbers. The job cuts are the most drastic here since the U.S. credit crunch hit over the summer. They are a bad twist for Sony, which has been recovering from internal problems in recent years under cost-cutting reforms led by Chief Executive Howard Stringer. "This may mean that Sony is now back at square one," said Kazuharu Miura, electronics analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research in Tokyo. "Japanese companies are all in trouble because of this unexpected worldwide slowdown." Miura also warned that Sony's measures might not be enough to offset its sliding profits. Sony's U.S. shares were up 87 cents, 4.3 percent, at $20.91 in afternoon trading. Sony said a plant in Dax, France, which makes tapes and other recording media will be among the plants to close, but it declined to list the others. The moves will deliver more than 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in savings a year by March 2010, the company said. Sony's announcement comes amid similar news from other Japanese manufacturers, which face plunging demand at home and abroad, as well as falling gadget prices and unfavorable currency fluctuations.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen since about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The dollar has dropped to about 93 yen from 117 yen last year, eroding with it Sony's foreign income. Hara said the ways the job cuts will be carried out will vary by country, but he did not provide a breakdown. Sony's electronics business employs about 160,000 workers. The company also has movie, video game and financial businesses. Sony has adjusted production and lowered inventories, but tough times demand more drastic efforts, it contends. The cost-cutting plan includes postponing an investment to boost production of liquid crystal display TVs in Slovakia because of a plunge in European demand for flat-panel TVs. Sony will also trim spending in semiconductors, and will outsource a portion of the production it had planned for image sensors for mobile phones. Apart from the 8,000 electronics job losses, Hara said Sony would cut at least 8,000 temporary jobs in the same sector by the end of March 2010. He said temporary workers are not counted in the tally of Sony's global work force. Sony usually can count on the year-end holiday shopping season to rake in sales of gadgets such as flat-panel TVs, Blu-ray disc players and game consoles. But consumer sentiments have been dashed by the financial meltdown. Hara said U.S. sales were holding up relatively well, but he acknowledged product prices may have to be cut, especially in Europe, which would diminish profit margins. Sony recently slashed its full-year earnings projection, citing weaker consumer demand and a stronger yen. For the fiscal year through March 2009, it is expecting a 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) profit, down 59 percent from the previous year. Since 2005, Stringer, the first foreigner to lead Sony, has gradually turned the company around, shedding money-losing operations and catching up in flat-panel TVs and portable music players. Hara acknowledged Stringer was sending Sony employees a sad message Tuesday.

"Twilight" Drained The Box Office In It's Opening Taking $70.5 M

The vampire romance "Twilight" drained the box office in its opening weekend, taking in $70.5 million. Catherine Hardwicke's film also enjoyed the biggest opening ever for a female director, blowing away the previous standard of $41.1 million set by Mimi Leder's "Deep Impact" in 1998. Drawing from its huge fan base of teenage girls, who fell for Stephenie Meyer's novel of forbidden love between brooding vampire Edward Cullen and bookish high schooler Bella Swan, "Twilight" made a whopping $20,636 per theater, according to Sunday morning estimates. And the fangirls will get another taste soon enough. Summit Entertainment, which released "Twilight," announced during the weekend that it's going ahead with production of "New Moon," based on the second book in Meyer's internationally best-selling series. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will return as its star-crossed lovers, but whether Hardwicke will be at the helm again is still being determined. The laid-back Hardwicke, who went bodyboarding at sunset Saturday to take her mind off this high-pressure weekend, said Sunday morning that she was heading to a meeting later in the day to discuss her possible involvement in "New Moon."

The big opening for "Twilight" also helps put Summit Entertainment on the map, said Richie Say, the company's president of domestic distribution. Summit has only been around since April 2007 and "Twilight," its sixth release, cost just $37 million to make. Ben Affleck is talking to children and aid officials in refugee camps in war-torn eastern Congo in an effort to raise awareness of the conflict that has displaced nearly 300,000 people. Ben has visited the Central African country four times since 2007 and also has made a documentary about its problems. Years of sporadic violence in eastern Congo intensified in August, when fighting heated up between the army and fighters loyal to rebel leader Laurent Nkunda. Some fear the current crisis could once again draw in neighboring countries. Congo's devastating 1998-2002 war split the vast nation into rival fiefdoms and involved half a dozen African armies. Ben said he first became interested in Congo a few years ago, when Hollywood's attentions began to focus another African crisis, Darfur. After doing more research on Africa, he was shocked to learn about Congo's four-year war, during which an estimated 5 million people died. Decades of instability and conflict mean everyone in Congo has a compelling story to tell. And the country's stunning landscapes rolling green fields, riotous fields of flowers, sparkling lakes and even a moodily smoking volcano deserve their own starring role. Would Affleck consider putting Congo on the big screen?

Winona Ryder Was Hospitalized After Falling Ill On A Flight To London

Winona Ryder was briefly hospitalized after falling ill on a flight to London's Heathrow Airport on Wednesday, her publicist said. Mara Buxbaum said that Winona was taken to a west London hospital "as a precaution" and had been released. British Airways said a flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow requested priority landing after a female passenger "required medical attention" and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Winona, who began her film career as a teenager in 1986, earned back to back Oscar nominations in the 1990s for "Little Women" and the "The Age of Innocence." She's also known for youthful roles in films including "Heathers," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Girl, Interrupted. She has mostly stayed out of the headlines after her 2002 conviction for stealing several thousand dollars worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Winona Ryder, had prescription drugs in her possession when she was arrested but a drug charge was dropped after a doctor said he had prescribed the medication. A probation report stemming from the shoplifting incident showed that Ryder had dozens of prescriptions filled by 20 doctors over three years.

Buxbaum said the actress was taken there as a precaution, has been released and is now fine. Buxbaum refused to go into the details of Ryder's illness. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, file)
